Organisers of the annual Okpekpe 10-km road race broke new grounds in the global marathon races when it received a renewal certificate from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) listing the annual event now in its fourth year with another bronze label for 2016.
The 10Km Road Race that began in 2013 in Okpekpe, Edo State has positively advertised the community, the Secretary to the Etsako Local Government Area has said.
According to Benedicta Attoh, before the marathon started, the people of Okpekpe used to say they hailed from Auchi, the headquarters of the old Etsako Local Government Area and now Etsako West simply because of the remoteness of the community and lack of a tarred road.
Ahead of this year’s Okpekpe 10-kilometre Road Race, His Royal Highness (HRH), Peter Abalumhe Osigbemeh, has urged the Edo State Government and organiser of the competition, Pamodzi Sports Marketing (PSM) to develop an expansive permanent arena for the jamboree of the tournament.
To ensure a better outing and record improved time from the previous years, local athletes for this year’s edition of the annual 10km IAAF certified Bronze label Okpekpe race have intensified training on the hilly Okpekpe road and its environs.
