Okpekpe is more than just a collection of fertile farmlands or a window into the past, it is a living modern village of approximately 50,000 people. The Village is famous for its position on the hill top in the Edo North Senatorial district and its huge agricultural and investment potential and quite a suitable tourism destination.

It is the Highest paying complete road race in Nigeria. It is different from the Obudu International mountain race which is run off-road. In terms of tourism,the area covers the highest point in Edo State.

The Okpekpe Road Race invites world-class runners from around the world in a tradition to intermix local recreational and up and coming runners with the best of the best. Invitation extended to all CAA Member Federations, all military and para-military have sent in entries (2,000 – 3,000).

Participating Countries: Kenya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Israel, Bahrain , Morocco and Nigeria have sent initial confirmation

 

START & FINISH

RACE DATE: SATURDAY, MAY 13, 2017

SCREENING : 6:00 AM

START TIME: 8:00 AM

TAKE OFF: From Apana Road to Okpekpe

DISTANCE: 10km (The starts will be from APANA ROAD. The finishes will be at Okpekpe Road.)

 

GETTING TO THE START

A direct bus will be available to take you from Benin (5 am) to Okpekpe (race Venue).

Buses will also be available to convey Invited Athletes from the Hotel to the Race Venue ,the bus will be marked “Okpekpe road race.”

There will be route tour on the 6th of May .

On the race day all Athletes shall be transported to the venue as early as 6am for screening, while the race start by 8am.

 

PARKING:

Please avoid parking on private property. If you park close to a business that will be open, your car may be towed. You may park at the official car park which is located close to the start Area of the race

 

RUNNING  NUMBER PICK-UP AND FINAL REGISTRATION:

Final Registration and Number Pickup starts on Wednesday May 10th to Friday  May 12th  from 8:00 p.m.  at Yak Hotel (Auchi, Benin Road)

Everyone is advised to collect their own running number in person and provide proof of identity.

PLEASE DO NOT SWITCH OR GIVE AWAY YOUR NUMBER. This creates problems in compiling the results. If you cover or alter your number, sell it or give it away, you will be disqualified and may be rejected from future races.

 

ACCREDITATION 

Athletes and Officials are expected to arrive as from 5th May, 2017 to begin the processes of screening and accreditation.

MEDICAL CERTIFICATION

We insist that athletes must complete the authentic application forms with duly certified medical report before confirmation can be given. We will also carry out own medical tests on all the athletes before accepting them to run.

RACE DAY TEMPERATURE

The temperature will be approximately between 25 – 30 Degree Celsius at the start.

 

RACE TIMING

The race will be timed using Full Automatic (FAT)  electronic timing system. There will be split timing at every kilometre.

DRINK /SPONGING STATION/REFRESHMENT

There shall be water,sponges and refreshment stations along the routes and at the finish.

 

TOILETS

There will be numerous portable toilets at the start , along the routes and finish area.

 

MEDICALS

A medical station will be available at the start, along the course and at the  finish.
There would be provision for well-equipped ambulances that will follow the runners all the way and Medics will also be present at every intermediary station.

There will be a sweeper bus that will pick athletes that are unable to continue the race.

 

ENTERTAINMENT

Live bands and a selection of other activities will be available at the Finish Area throughout the day to entertain the participants and spectators. Food and Beverage facilities will also be available .

 

FINISH PROCEDURE :

  • There will be a clock at the finish.
  • There will be provision for physiotherapy.
  • There will be a mix zone for interviews etc
  • The Awards Ceremony will begin immediately After the race.
    There will be an award podium at the finish for the top three finishers.
  • Doping procedures follows immediately after the Award ceremony.
