Amike Named Okpekpe Race Elite Athletes Manager

Former Nigeria track and field international Henry Amike has been named as the Elite Athletes and Finish manager for the sixth IAAF Silver Label Okpekpe international 10km road race which holds next month in Okpekpe near Auchi, Etsako East local government of Edo State.

Zack Amodu, the director of organisation for the first road race in Nigeria nay West Africa to be granted an IAAF label status says the choice of Amike who still holds the Nigeria record (48.50 seconds) in the men’s 400m hurdles is to ensure nothing goes wrong with the management of the elite athletes right from their arrival into Nigeria, at the competition venue and until their departure after the race.

“We are delighted Henry Amike has accepted to be our elite athletes manager for the sixth IAAF silver label Okpekpe race. Amike comes with loads of experience in international athletics and he is the right person to liase with the elite athletes that have registered for the race,” said Amodu.

“Amike will take responsibility for the athletes upon arrival in Nigeria, manage their trip to Okpekpe, their hotel accommodation and will accompany them on the route tour a day to the race,’Amodu added and revealed that Amike has acted in that role in past editions of the race.

‘What we have done is to call on somebody who has had the experince of managing these international and local elite athletes,” he explained.

Amike will also double as the Finish manager for the race and Amodu is confident of a seamless organisation of the race both technically and administratively.

“In conjunction with the start manager who we will soon announce,Amike will be responsible for the setting up of the finish area. This include the toilets, baggage handling, crowd control barriers, break down and removal after the finish among other things,” said Amodu.

Amike ran in the finals of the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, USA and the IAAF World Championships in Rome,Italy in 1987.
