The Okpekpe international 10km road race has been elevated to an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Silver Label event.This good news was first conveyed to the promoter of the race,Mike Itemuagbor by Alessio Punzi,the IAAF Road Running Manager in an email last month. The Okpekpe Road Race/Marathon started five years ago when Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was the Governor of Edo state.

Ethiopia’s Leul Gebresilase, winner of the men’s race at the fifth edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race held three weeks ago in Okpekpe near Auchi in Edo State has proved he is one of the athletes to watch out for this season.
The 24-year-old who came second behind Kenya’s Korio Alex Olotptip at the third edition of the Okpekpe race in 2015 before breaking the Kenyan dominance over a fortnight ago ran a personal season best time of 28:43 to win the IAAF Gold Label Ottawa 10K in Ottawa, Canada at the weekend.
“This is a confirmation of the fact that we brought truly world-class athletes to compete at the Okpekpe race. We brought gold-level running athletes to compete in a bronze label event which shows our ambition to move up the ranking into gold in no time,” said Dare Esan, spokesman for the Okpekpe race.
Edo state government is to set up a technical committee to plan a three year development programme for the Okpekpe 10 kilometer road race ahead of the May 12 date already set aside for next year’s event.
Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu disclosed this Monday when he played host to the organizers of the race, led by Chief Mike Itemuagbor who were at the Government House, Benin on an appreciation visit to government for the successful hosting of this year’s event which held last Saturday. Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, yesterday, completed the 10km Okpekpe Road Race in 86.4 minutes to fulfill his promise to run for We Care Trust Charity.
Hot on his heels were Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu, who completed the race in 86.7 minutes and former governor Adams Oshiomhole, who completed the race after 87.3 minutes of perspiration.

It was a clean sweep of medals for the Ethiopians in the men’s category of the 5th edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race held on Saturday, May 13th in Edo State.
The Ethiopian trio of Leul Gebriesialse (00:29:28), Jima Bekele (00:29.34) and Dawit Fikadu (00:32.22) crossed the finishing line one after the other to beat their Kenyan counterparts to the top prize of the only IAAF bronze label race in Nigeria. The Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung has commended the organisers of the fifth edition of the Okpekpe 10km road race for its successful completion.
Mr Dalung however noted that it is necessary to organise similar races across the country not just for the health benefits but also for development of the country’s professional athletes.

The Minister of Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, has decried what he described as “negative publicity” given to Nigerian athletes.
Dalung said this after the 5th Okpekpe International 10km Road Race in Edo State on Saturday.
